Why Gen Z Homeowners Cutting Insurance Is a Big Mistake

I recently read an article from PropertyCasualty360 titled "Gen Z is Dropping Home Insurance in 2025", and I couldn’t let it pass without weighing in.

If you're a Gen Z homeowner, hear me out. Canceling or cutting your homeowners insurance might seem like a smart budget move, but it’s not. It’s a costly mistake that can come back to bite you hard.

One Unexpected Event Can Wipe You Out

Insurance is for the things you never see coming. A kitchen fire. A tree falling through the roof. A burst pipe during a cold snap. These things happen more often than you think. And when they do, the costs are no joke. A roof replacement can run $15,000+. Water damage cleanup? Easily $5,000 or more.

Without proper coverage, all of that comes straight out of your pocket.

Mortgage Lenders Require Insurance

If you’re thinking you can just skip it, think again. If you have a mortgage, your lender will not allow you to go uninsured. If you cancel your policy, they’ll tack on something called forced-placed insurance. It’s overpriced and it doesn’t protect you. It protects them.

Forced-placed coverage usually excludes liability, your belongings, and loss-of-use. So not only are you paying more, you're not even covered the way you need to be.

An HO3 Policy Is What You Actually Need

An HO3 policy is the standard homeowners insurance that gives you real protection. It covers the structure, your stuff, personal liability, and pays for temporary housing if your place becomes unlivable.

Downgrading to a stripped-down version or canceling altogether puts your finances and your home at serious risk.

Want to Save Money the Smart Way?

Here’s how to lower your premium without losing solid protection:

  • Bundle your home and auto

  • Ask about discounts for things like alarm systems, new roofs, or even smart devices

  • Consider adjusting your deductible

  • Sit down with an agent who will actually walk you through it

These are the moves that save money and keep your coverage strong.

Final Thought

Buying a home is a big deal. Keeping it protected is even bigger. Don’t roll the dice with something this important.

If you’re not sure what your policy includes or you think you might be overpaying, let’s talk. I’ll help you figure it out and make sure you’re covered the right way.

Stay smart. Stay protected.
